Metropolitan Nathanael's Remarks on 100th Commemoration of the Great Catastrophe »
April 12, 2019
Beloved, while the Great Catastrophe is a horror beyond words, a sinful tragedy beyond understanding, and an impenetrable mystery, an even greater mystery and capacity beyond words is the human heart’s ability to love all people. Finding ourselves in the midst of Great and Holy Lent, it is fitting for us to fix our eyes on the example of our Lord and to eschew hatred, bigotry and racism of any kind.

March 8, 2019
We can say that true repentance is to recognize our sinful state and to seek out God. These two elements – repentance and seeking God – must go hand in hand. For the recognition and acceptance of our weaknesses, when not coupled with seeking God, can lead a person to disappointment and despair. Everything that we do during this period – fasting, attending services, almsgiving, prayer, confession, etc. – we do as a means to seek God.

In a world of manifold confusion, the ascetic experience of Orthodoxy constitutes an invaluable spiritual asset, an inexhaustible source of divine knowledge and human wisdom. The blessed phenomenon of ascesis, whose spirit pervades our entire way of life – for “asceticism is Christianity in its entirety” – is not the privilege of the few or chosen, but an “ecclesial event,” a communal good, a shared blessing and the common vocation for all faithful without exception.
