Director of the Office of the Metropolitan

About Us:

Tracing its roots back to 1923, the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago is the diocese of the Greek Orthodox faithful in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, as well as northern Indiana and southeastern Missouri, consisting of 58 parishes and two monastic communities. The Metropolis is one of nine Metropolises in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and is presided over by His Eminence Metropolitan Nathanael.


We are seeking a Director of the Office of the Metropolitan to provide administrative, managerial and operational support to our hierarch and his office. This is a full-time exempt position. In this role, you will be responsible for the administration and management of the Metropolitan’s office, including our hierarch’s professional and liturgical calendars, conferences, meetings and events; his internal and external communications with parishes, clergy and interfaith leaders; developing office procedures and protocols; serving as a liaison with ministry leaders; and overseeing the logistics of the Metropolis’ office relocation and other special projects as needed. You will be required to attend high-level internal and external meetings and may be called upon to travel from time to time.

Candidates must demonstrate:

  • The capacity to anticipate needs and ensure seamless scheduling, planning, preparation and follow up for meetings and events 

  • The ability and desire to work in a fast paced, deadline-driven environment requiring flexibility and problem-solving skills

  • The ability to work flexible hours

  • Exceptional communications skills – speak, listen, write, and respond with clarity, intention, and effect

  • Excellent written communication skills, ability to compose well-written emails and general correspondence 


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the Metropolitan’s office, develop protocols and procedures to keep the office organized, well-run and efficient

  • Manage internal and external communications, triaging, qualifying, and responding if appropriate

  • Liaising with ministry leadership

  • Manage internal and public calendars

  • Serve as a gatekeeper to prioritize access to leadership

  • Manage travel and meeting schedule including travel itinerary and booking arrangements

  • Attend high level meetings and conferences, assist in the preparation and follow-up required for those meetings

  • Manage events/appearances, including scheduling, material preparation and communications

  • Arrange meetings and conference calls including agenda preparation and minutes

  • Prepare/edit/proofread reports/PowerPoint presentations

  • Special projects, such as overseeing the logistics of the Metropolis’s office relocation


Skills and Requirements:

  • Professional experience working with C-Level executive 

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred

  • Confident and respectful communication style

  • Assurance to interact with hierarchs, religious leaders, and interfaith groups

  • A proactive attitude to anticipate needs including the ability to supervise and direct others

  • A steady disposition – not easily upset or affected by critique

  • Ability to maintain a calm demeanor under pressure

  • Ability to execute multiple projects concurrently with an exacting attention to detail

  • A pleasant, professional, service-oriented presence 

  • Strong decision making and analytical abilities

  • Ability to discern when assertiveness or deference are required

  • Technical expertise and mastery of Microsoft Office 365
