2020 Servant Leadership Award Recipients

His Eminence Metropolitan Nathanael created the Servant Leadership Awards as a way to honor lay stewards in our Metropolis who have demonstrated exceptional and innovative servant leadership, and whose service has inspired others to participate in the life of the Church. Each parish within the Metropolis was asked to select an individual from their parish to receive the Metropolis Bronze Cross in recognition of his or her outstanding servant leadership.

The Bronze Crosses were to have been bestowed on the recipients by the Metropolitan at the Servant Leadership Awards Banquet on May 1, 2020. However, COVID-19 physical distancing restrictions prevented that Banquet from being held. As a result, His Eminence decided to bring the Bronze Crosses to the recipients - either by visiting them at their homes or honoring them in their parishes.

Alex Marlis

Alex has been a parish member since 1976 and an active parish councilman since 1982. As a board member, he has held the positions of president and vice president numerous times. His unique leadership has guided the church through ups and downs. Alex is able to cut to the root of a problem and present common-sense solutions in a loving manner that appeals to all. As a pillar of our community, he is always there to encourage, support and engage with anyone. In 2000, his innovative character led him to initiate and spearhead our church golf outing, which has become an annual event that generates not only financial benefits but also, a wonderful fellowship within the community. As a humble servant of the church, he has directed campaigns, multiple committees, chaired the annual festival, and helped the church in any way he can without ever looking for recognition.
